The Verbal Artist Social Network

...4 all creative souls...

Someone please explain to me why everyone loves his work. Maybe you're seeing something I don't understand the hype.

no hate, just an honest/sincere question.

I don't think EVERYONE loves his work, but the reason people did like his work was because it had a lot of freedom, social themes, street art style mixed with fine art, he had messages and not just aesthetics, and he became popular because Andy Warhol co-signed him as a "great" artist.

Being a artist is not just about the ability to draw, or paint, or create aesthetically pleasing images... it's about the energy in the piece, the emotion, the message, the freedom, the level of depth, the ability to show things in a whole new way and so forth. Not everybody who can draw is an artist. Basquiat was a true artist. Throughout time some of the people considered the best were not necessarily the most aesthetically pleasing... they were the one's who could capture the soul of something, or the emotion of something... they were the one's who you couldn't put into a box and often times even if only by coincidence they lived very tragic lives even if the tragedies were only known after their deaths. You couldn't just say: he paints a pretty face, or a pretty car, or etc... but when you looked at their work you could see something far deeper than good aesthetics. I can relate to this.

apologies for going M.I.A (again)

I just recently watched the movie about his life and I still don't really get "it" I guess it's bitterness maybe? It looks like he basically wandered through life as a black hippy who got lucky. People were giving him thousands of dollars just for throwing spaghetti sauce on a menu at a restaurant.

It also bothers me that other artist who actually put in effort like YOURSELF ( I'm not going to pretend like I know everything about your life, but I'm assuming you're not making millions...but you probably do...i dunno....if so hook me up please, lol) are starving artist when he was making millions for things most of us could do in our sleep.

I don't have nothing personal against the man or his work personally, I like weird artsy people, and I prefer their company to the so called "normal sane folks" but it just doesn't seem fair to me. I'm also fully aware that amongst the trendy/hipster art culture that it's not popular to criticize him but eh.........I'm from the hood.

shit doesn't even out.

maybe I'm just a hater?

yep, that's it. I'm definitely a hater, I want millions for throwing spaghetti on a menu too dammit!

If you keep going, you will get exactly what you deserve. Even Basquiat was once a "Starving Artist". All it takes is for the right person to come across your work. Your job is to keep creating and SHARING as much as possible, and remain authentic. Someone will see it, and even if they don't bring you notariety, you will gain it on your own.
